Tuesday's Mental Musings

I have been known to tell people that they matter to me, that I adore them and that just by doing what they are doing they inspire me.

Some people graciously accept my admiration and understand the sincerity of my words. I am not good at "kissing ass", if I were; I would be further along in my life and career.

Some people become suspicious and cautious as if my words are those of a stalker who desires their accomplishments and lives. Trust me; I have enough of a time handling the day to day of living my own life.

Though I may temper my expression with those who can not readily accept admiration I do not stop thanking those whose lives and actions are worthy of accolades. Sometimes it takes one thank you for each of us to realize how amazing we are.

Tuesday's Mental Musings

It is the beginning of the Thanksgiving Holiday week, the one holiday across America that most of us celebrate without issue. Many of us celebrate it in honor of our nation's historical beginning, many of us celebrate it as the harvest feast it was meant to be and there are those of us that celebrate it because it's a tradition we've accepted without consideration.

I grew up celebrating Thanksgiving as a Feast of Gratitude and I continue to do so. Though bombarded at school with images of Pilgrims they never found their way into the homes of most of my family, though images of Indians and Turkeys and Corn were all over the place!

On the day of the feast we would gather around a table ladened with our traditional foods and the "exotic" dishes of those who had joined our family through marriage and friendship. The meal marked a time of gratitude and plenty. It was a time to enjoy the largest meal of the year before hunkering down with the idea that winter meant limited access to fresh produce. And even though fruits and veggies were imported and accessible when I was young -just an fyi, I'm not 100 but I did live in East Brooklyn ;) . We never considered paying for fruits and veggies "out of season", instead we lived off root, frozen or canned veggies and fruits, grains and dried fruits and such.
Grace was always said before we ate. Our prayer never included a religious icon. Instead it always thanked the Creator (God), acknowledged the elder family members no longer at the table, showed appreciation for those around the table, especially those that had contributed and worked on the feast and welcomed the new members, both family and friend, to the fold. This is the same prayer I still say before each family meal.

Of course times have changed. The economy sucks and I know many out of work or struggling to make ends meet. I know some who wondered how Thanksgiving would arrive this year, but arrive it did. This year many of us will return to simple traditions. Our meals will still be feasts but smaller meals that reflect the past and ground us in our present. My family will pull out my grandmother's succotash recipe, make my great-gram’s skillet corn bread, using some of it to stuff that turkey and pop string beans for a simple sauté. The cranberries will be made the night before and kept in the frigde next to the greens that will be cleaned and cooked the morning of the meal. There will be pumpkin and apple pies and the sweet potatoes will be used for yams candied with maple syrup.

And there will be our prayer of gratitude because all of us have cause to be grateful - we are here, we are here and every day above ground is worth praise.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Mugging for the Camera

I am on a coffee mug hunt. I have given up on coffee cups, they don't hold enough coffee...on a walk through the Urban Outfitters on the corner of 14th Street and 6th Avenue I found these....

I'm not certain if any of them are "the ones" but they did make me laugh.

Ohhh GREAT PUMPKIN CHARLIE BROWN...

I love, love, love pumpkin. I love it so much that I usually mash my Halloween pumpkin so that I can use the meat to bake and cook with. Following is one of my favorite pumpkin bread recipes

Preheat Oven to 350 degrees F
Grease and Flour 3 x 7" Loaf Pans
In to a large mixing bowl
Add 15 oz of pumpkin puree

4 Eggs
3/4 Cup of Water
 1 Cup of Vegetable Oil
2 Cups of White Sugar
Blend until well mixed
In a separate bowl Shift 3 1/2 C Flour
2 Teaspoons Baking Soda
1 1/2 Teaspoons Salt
And 1 Tablespoon of Pumpkin Spice
(or 1 T ground cinnamon, 1 T ground nutmeg, 1/2 t ground cloves, 1/4 t ground ginger)
Whisk dry ingredients into pumkin mixture
Pour into prepared pans
Baked for 50 minutes, until toothpick comes out dry

I sometimes add raisins, flax or hemp seeds and top with raw pumpkin seeds that toast in the oven

ENJOY!

Tuesday's Mental Musings

on a Wednesday...

I have decided that regardless of how people treat me that I am going to treat them not in kind but how I want to be treated - with respect, directness, honesty, empathy and affection.

I know this decision will require diligence. I will have to learn not to reflect the behavior and attitudes of many I encounter and to by-pass my own emotional state so that I reach beyond any negativity created by our interaction.

This doesn't mean that I will accept less than what I want to project and share but it does mean that I will need to set perimeters with those people whose lives and attitudes are poisonous to my health.

I know I can't eliminate everyone that infects my life with all the negatives - anger, bitterness, prejudice, sloth - but I trust that by maintaining a respectful and healthy distance and an attitude that doesn't react to their issues and behavior eventually those people will find their place in my life. Hopefully those places will be in the background of this amazing journey....

BDNY's Last Day

Yesterday was the launch of the Boutique Design New York Show (Nov 14-15). Over 150 design industry manufacturers and more designers than one can count came together at the Javits Center to present some unique and innovative products for the hospitality industry.

Though the company I work for was represented I didn't have to be in the booth this year, next year might be a different story!  Instead I was able to benefit from my friend Eddie's charm and knowledge of the industry, he knows more people than I will forget, as we walked the hall. Some of my favs were -

Hallmark Collective's Diamond Ring Chandelier  ( http://hallmarklighting.com/about-us.php )

Every rug created by fellow Brooklynite Malene B(http://www.maleneb.com/)
Mendi by Malene b

Cowrie by Malene b

Caaaaaawfeeeeeeeee Habits

Those of you who know me or read this blog know my love of coffee. Well recently in an attempt to simplify my coffee ritual and routine I whittled down my process. Doing so made me realize that there are 3 things that guarantee a good cup of coffee

THING #1
Whole Coffee Beans
Even bad beans are better when freshly ground.
Ground coffee quickly loses its flavor
After filling my Kitchenaid Glass grinder the rest of the whole beans are kept in a zip lock bag in the freezer until needed

THING #2
A pinch of kosher salt sprinkled atop the grounds before brewing
The salt mellows any bitterness

THING #3

A Flask to keep coffee hot and mellow
I use the above Ikea Flask.
It's inexpensive ($8) and keeps coffee heated all day

Tuesday's Mental Musings

Earlier this year a friend of mine became a born again Christian. This week I decided that at this point in time she and I can no longer be friends.

I don't have issues with Christians. In fact I hold fast to some of the teachings of that faith and have Catholic tendencies. I do have a distaste for judmental converts who hold so tight to the concepts and ideals of their new found "faith" that they begin to shut out the possibility that there are many paths to happiness and salvation. This distaste extends those who find Buddha, Mohammad, Yoga, Atkins, Atheism or any other belief sytem that they believe leaves little or no room for tolerance and possibility.

I do have issues with people who "know" that their beliefs are the only valid and correct beliefs and "know" that all those outside of their faith are not living right or in some cases are "living an evil life".

I do have issue with those whose new found zealotry makes them arrogant and judgemental and in turn they seek to eliminate that which they do not understand rather than understand that we each come to our salvation (whatever that may be) at the proper time and place.

I do have issue with those who judge others yet ask not to be judged.

When I can no longer tolerate such behavior I know that it is time for me to let go and let God.
