Sweet Dreams....

On Sunday I went to Lowes and as expected was truly inspired by all the "toys' the store sells. I took 100s of pictures and will be posting some of them with what I hope are inspiring suggestions.

Thinking outside the box is a great way to create items that add a little luxury to your life. Inexpensive doesn't mean lack of quality but it can mean that you have to put some time and effort into making them work for you.

I recently made an upholstered headboard using a printed fabric shower curtain. I am still working on all the buttons (black or Fucshia? I can't decided) but while at Lowes I saw a number of materials that could inspire me to make at least a half dozen headboards.

Following are just a few ideas that are distracting me from making those buttons -

These Cedar Stain Log Edges are meant to be used in a garden. They come in 2" x 36" lengths and cost around $8.00 a strand. The logs are staggered and I immediately saw a headboard covered with the puzzle like pieces. Of course you would have to like the light scent of cedar (I know there are giant hamsters out there!!!) but I think if you stain, paint and seal the logs it should minimize the scent. If a headboard doesn't work imagine a boxed coffee table covered with this stuff or using it lining one wall of a walk in closet where cedar is actually helpful.....

This is a picket fence. Obvious, I know, but consider removing the pieces from the strand and tightening their position to create a country inspired head and/or footboard by attaching them to panels that can be painted or stained before attaching to them to the head and foot of a bed frame. The fencing costs $11.98 for an 8ft roll.

This fencing is metal and decorative. It's 24" wide and costs $9.47 per piece. The metal isn't finished and it is rather light, but I can see a number of them being painted, arranged and attached to a really beautiful piece of wood with moulding added to create an rich metal and wood headboard. They could also be used to make paneled wall art.
