No Ransom Was Paid

Last Friday my sister and I crossed the Tappan Zee Bridge for a visit to the one place you should always visit if you must cross the Tappan Zee Bridge - The Rockland Bakery. I would like to say I was kidnapped but I must admit I was a willing victim.

This landmark bakery has been supplying the surrounding areas and states with freshed bake goods for over 40 years but there is nothing better than being able to buy them hot from the oven or freshly frosted and decorated.

The purchase of Raisen Pecan Bread to split, Challah Bread to use for Saturday morning's French toast, 2 Pettifors for the car ride, a slice of Crumb Cake for Sunday breakfast and a mini Cupcake for the nephew later and we were off onto our next adventure.

I wonder if Thelma and Louise would have ended the way it did if they had lived near the Rockland Bakery?

Good Luck ..

Finding Cynthia Vincent's Gladiator Wedge Sandal. It sold out the week it arrived at the Target stores in New York. The funny thing is that it's all over Ebay selling for way more than the original $29.99.

Breaking A Promise

When Birkenstocks first appeared as a trend in Brooklyn I swore up and down I would never wear them. Back then they came in natural, black and brown nubuck options. Since then the options are overwhelming, especially from companies "inspired" by the style. This year Birkenstock has a blue patent leather option that makes me want to break my promise. Tuesday's Mental Musings

Post-1945
In Communist Eastern Europe, Romanies experienced assimilation schemes and restrictions of cultural freedom.[citation needed] The Romani language and Romani music were banned from public performance in Bulgaria.[dubious – discuss] In Czechoslovakia, they were labeled a "socially degraded stratum,"[citation needed] and Romani women were sterilized as part of a state policy to reduce their population. This policy was implemented with large financial incentives, threats of denying future welfare payments, with misinformation, or after administering drugs (Silverman 1995; Helsinki Watch 1991). An official inquiry from the Czech Republic, resulting in a report (December 2005), concluded that the Communist authorities had practiced an assimilation policy towards Romanies, which "included efforts by social services to control the birth rate in the Romani community" and that "the problem of sexual sterilization carried out in the Czech Republic, either with improper motivation or illegally, exists"[50] with new revealed cases up until 2004, in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.[51]

Feeling Blue...

I have a formal function to go to at the end of June and I want to wear something new, something special to it. Instead of searching for a dress that will "do" I have decided to make something to wear. I am building the ensemble around a pair of elegant silver strappy sandals that I have only worn twice. For the last week I all I can think of is blue.

Tuesday's Mental Musings

A few months ago I read an article in the New York Times concerning complaining parents who live in the area of Brooklyn I live in. (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/19/dining/19soft.html?ref=dining).

The piece was concerned with the location of ice cream vendors in Prospect Park. Issues of health and vendor permits aside, the article left me annoyed. When did we become a nation of whining, self indulgent beings incapable of teaching our children, and our selves, discipline and the responsibility of choice and control? After reading the article I wanted to head over to Prospect Park and find those parents and tell them “to grow a pair" and tell your child "no” or to make the choise to move away from the cart. I wanted to remind them that if the cart truly annoyed them they had the right and ability to work with the park to legally sort placement areas for the vendors so not to keep people from their livelihood, that they would need to become aware of their own proximity to the carts and of course take on the responsibility to saying "no" and working through the issues that "no" lesson brings. I also wanted a coconut ice but then that's my issue.

Mad Hatter

With the sunny weather upon us I can't help but want to add to my already extensive-I-don't-have-enough-heads-to wear-all-those-hats hat collection, especially after seeing the ribbon hats from Hat A Girl. The packable ribbon hats come in a variety of color and style options all of which have protective wide brims that provide up to a SPF 50 protection.

Prices range from $19-24 a hat
